The final battle, if you have the stamina to make it, is an exercise in tedium: Fall once and you submit to a life-depleting pounding. Kryptonite Movesĭeath and Return has some thumb-busting segments and plot-building intermissions, but by the time you reach the later levels, you'll be worn out by the redundancy of the game play. For example, the flying enemy Warworlder is simply recolored Elite from earlier levels. However, the Genesis can't always keep up the pace with the other audio, and often drops key sound effects when the action gets heavy, which momentarily pulls you out of the game.ĭeath and Return's graphics are really sharp and colorful, but the animation is often jerky and quite repetitive. The background music rocks, providing adrenaline-pumping motivation as you play. This setup simplifies the switch from one superhero to the next. The on-screen moves may be unique - such as the Man of Steel's sledgehammer swing - but the end result is nearly always effective. A race around the city against Myxyzptlk is available, as is a Bizarro mode in which you must destroy the city.Fortunately, control is consistent from character to character. The basic game is broken up a little with two distinct sequences. Aside from the main story missions, there are 200 kittens to save and numerous fires to extinguish. Metropolis is portrayed as a vast open world in which you can fly anywhere and complete any side mission anytime. You can also use a lamppost as a club by tearing it down. You can also pick up objects to throw at villains, such as the Daily Planet globe and tanker trucks. Combat is done through melee (you learn new combos as you progress through the game) and direct application of Superman’s heat vision and freeze breath. Superman does not take any damage, which is unusual for this genre, and all of the challenges revolve around saving others from harm. You have constant access to Superman’s abilities, such as heat vision, freeze breath, invulnerability, and supersonic flight, though the latter is limited by a stamina bar. You pilot the man as he flies around Metropolis, saving citizens and fighting natural disasters, fires, and supervillains. The film Superman Returns is based on the same name.
